I have never really listened to PJ Harvey, she is one of those artists that I have always admired and respected, but never one that caught my attention enough to warrant buying an album. With the release of her latest album and the accolades that followed, I decided it was high time for me to start paying more attention to her music then just a sidelong glance.
This girl has some pretty heavy demons, her songs are withering in torment and held together with a strange acceptance of her own failings. She sings like she has been broken, torn apart and pieced back together as a stronger soul. Her voice has an earthly quality that makes her seem so much closer to the world then the current princess' of pop, she sounds like she has lived through it all, and her hauntingly fragile voice speaks of fighting, understanding and her own twisted world.
Her music is a sparse collection of basic instrumentation that somehow manages to be both warm and inviting while also pushing you away. This album will infect your ears with such a heavy heart that you will either be instantly repulsed or drawn in.
PJ Harvey deserves the praise she has received for this album, it is truly an amazing piece of rock'n'roll.
