Kutless enters the Christian music scene with this solid rock album showcasing all the elements and signs of what could turn out to be a very popular band.
“Your Touch” is a great way to kick off the debut. Pounding its way through singing, raps and a few screams, this song is one of the better cuts. “Run” is the power ballad of the album. Featuring prominent cello parts, the song is beautifully done. Its one of those songs that whenever I listen to it, I kick myself for not listening to more often. Pound for pound one of the better power ballads in my collection.
“Vow” is more melodic hard rock, toned down a bit. While the sound is all right, the song topic is a little different. It’s about making a new years vow. Huh? Thankfully the next song “Pride Away” makes you forget all about “Vow.” “Pride Away” follows the same veins as “Your Touch,” only better. A rap, melody, screams, moody driving guitars; this song has it all. This is possibly the best song on the album.
“Tonight” is a worship song gone hard rock. With this chorus: “Can’t you feel the music all around you?/ Flashing lights where love can fill your mind/ Can’t you feel the sounds of love flow through you?/ We’re praising Him tonight” it’s plain that this is not a typical church-pew worship song. It’s right up there with the other rock tracks.
The final song “Grace and Love” is a piano driven song, featuring guest vocals by lead singer Jon Micah Sumrall’s wife.
The other songs offer typical melodic hard rock tunes that can be found any direction you turn in the music world today. But thanks to Aaron Sprinkle’s neat, clean production, this is one of the better batches of those songs.
