My Grade: 2.5 stars

Sounds like: At The Drive In, Rage Against the Machine, Sunny Day Real Estate

I have the feeling everything is stolen. You know when you first hear some indie rock saviors that explode in a fit of creativity but leave behind something awesome and amazing for every two-bit imitator to steal, like Sunny Day Real Estate, Roadside Monument, At The Drive In and so many others who were short lived and beautiful. I fell in love with those artists and the music they created and even with the imitators who tried to hard to sound the same.

MewithoutYou has destroyed my hope for tomorrow. They have taken some of the best elements in indie rock and molded them into slick production and high fashion values, creating something perfect for middle class emo kids to cry over. The oh-so-clever lyrics (note my sarcasm) and perfect display of catchy musicianship, everything on this record screams out to me – this is safe music.

There is nothing threatening, nothing outside the ordinary, this is emo music made for your parents to accept, made to feel different enough to call yourself alternative while making sure you are not any different then the other ‘alternative’ kids. I am not calling the musicians bad, oh no, they are very talented hacks who have usurped the alternative community, they hold themselves well and play their instruments with ease and come up with some fairly catch music to get my attention, but the feeling that something is not right (not to mention being released on Tooth & Nail) is all over this album.

A surefire hit I am sure, all the little boys and girls will probably love the ‘edgy’ sound and oh-so-smart (note the sarcasm, again) lyrics; but please, don’t listen to the safe imitators, find the originators.

I will pass on this.
