Blood Or Whiskey – Cashed Out On Culture
Label: Punkcore
Style: Street Punk, Irish Punk
Released: 2005
My Grade: 2.5 stars
AMG: n/a
Sounds like: The Pogues, Stiff Little Fingers
Another punk band, another anti-social rant, another hate filled ideal and of course they are Irish. The a-typical punk band in every form, these guys regurgitate the past and spit socially conscious lyrics without any action.
Most of the time Blood or Whiskey recall another Irish punk band, The Pogues, in both style and substance, especially on the tracks “No Answer” and “Glory O”. I wont call this band a rip-off because I am sure they are sincere, and that they really have the punk ethos down; but maybe I am jaded this week, maybe I woke up in an anti-punk state of mind, but I just cannot get into this album or a single track in it. The music is much more straight forward punk then the more mainstream counterparts in Flogging Molly and The Dropkick Murphys, these guys are not trying to sell themselves in any way, they just rock out to a dead sound.
If you are looking for some great punk rock, check out labelmates The Havoc, or even the seminal Pogues themselves, the music played on this album has everything needed to be classic punk, but it just misses.
Maybe I missed the boat, but more then likely I am just waving goodbye to these guys.
